Painter, sketcher, water-color artist and
professor. Born in Santiago de los Caballeros on December 20, 1946.
Pursued studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in that city, at the
Catholic University “Madre y Maestra”, Travels to Spain where he
studied restoration of retables (altar-pieces), sponsored by UNESCO and
also attended a workshop in plastic arts at the Madrid School of Arts.
From 1974 he works as a sketching teacher in his hometown Academy of
Fine Arts and at the School of Humanities of Universidad Autonoma de
Santo Domingo (UASD).
He has restored at least 20 Vela Zanetti’s murals at the “ Héroes de la
Restauración” Monument in Santiago de los Caballeros. He also worked in
restoration for the Inventory Center of Cultural Goods and in the
Wooden Saints Collection of the Puerto Rican Cultural Institute. Peña
has participated in a great number of collective exhibitions shown at
his hometown University (PUCMM), Ateneo “Amantes de la Luz”, Theater
House, Alliance Française, Cultural Center of Santiago, Caferelli
Gallery, Santo Domingo Sheraton Hotel, as well as the Central
University of Panama. Won a Third Prize at the Flower Arrangements
Contest in Santiago de los Caballeros.
His individual expositions have been held at the Alliance Française, El
Greco Art Gallery, La Plaza Gallery, Bastidas House and Altos de
Chavón. Cuquito Peña is a complete artist. As sketcher synthesizes his
conception of the technical and imaginative strokes into a tight
workmanship and concentrated expression. As painter, defines a
realistic style with bright contrasts and a sharp figurative
expressionism, dominating the exposed design of the environmental and
the atmospheres. As water-color painter, gains a sober diaphaneity in
the colours spots and tones, A creative energy and peaceful intimism of
light and beauty.
